How can we encourage newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic children to engage in understanding food intake and choices in a more enjoyable way, promoting a positive and healthy lifestyle?

MiniSugr is a world created for children who are newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Children from 9–12 years old learn to manage food intake and how to comply with diet therapy in a more enjoyable and playful method. Establishing an emotional and personal connection with their chosen little monster by starting their diabetes journey through caring, playing, and learning.

 


 

Insight

Type 1 diabetes is an incurable disease and common among children. The body will no longer produce insulin, so everything that child eats needs to be carefully planned and calculated in order to control the blood sugar level. For T1D patients, a lot of things are connected to food, so it is important to understand diet therapy compliance. For both children and parents who are new to this disease, there is a lot of information that needs to be taken in, but with little time to absorb. For children, the information is overloaded and complex, because most information is geared towards parents. 

Idea

MiniSugr is a product that combines with digital and physical applications for children who are new to Type 1 diabetes from the ages of 9-12. The idea behind MiniSugr is to recreate a fun and relaxing atmosphere for children facing difficulties when they need to start to think about managing diabetes, especially when dealing with diet. With personalized information, the platform creates an enjoyable interaction through taking care of their little monster, playing, farming, learning, etc. Children can learn the necessary information about food through a more child-friendly way, where it provides a new way to learn through playing. 


Impact

The engagement begins with an emotional connection through playing and learning in MiniSugr. With the help of MiniSugr, both children and parents can ease the burden and bring engagement to children with less stress and unpleasant emotions. It offers a fun way to manage diabetes and to learn basic information through playing for the children. And for parents, it will become a new way to start a conversation with their children. 

 


 

 


 

Biography

ZongQi is an industrial design student at OCAD University. Her interests lie in between product and experience design, where she likes solving complex problems through a simple, intuitive, and fun approach.
