Pathfinder

How might we create a system allowing users to precisely understand the space they are navigating through?

Pathfinder—a three step product—focuses on the exterior wayfinding system of Toronto’s Ryerson University. It aims to solve the current issues of navigation, orientation, and lack of emotional security displayed by its new visitors. It includes an upgraded map, placed at the entrance points of the campus. A QR code opens a browser allowing the user to input their destination. Lastly, a renewed version of a building identifier connects the three parts of the system, which ultimately supports users through their journey.

Insight

Pathfinder stems from thorough research methods such as interviews, design probes, and experiments conducted on Ryerson universities campus. The methods revealed an overlap between primary and secondary research. Users lacked emotional security from their surroundings due to the difficulty of locating maps. They were often confused with the campus maps which hindered their ability to follow and utilize them. Additionally, participants of the experiments showed a huge dependence on technology during moments of confusion or discomfort while navigating. Through further investigation, I discovered that the university has multiple apps which were unknown to the user all along, with inconsistencies in the maps and repeating architectural elements throughout the campus.

Idea

In order for users to feel a sense of emotional security in a new environment, they would have to feel comfortable within the space they are in. The reason we are inclined to move freely through a familiar place is because we know the area well. My goal was to bring the idea of familiarity to the campus for first time visitors so they are able to achieve this sense of emotional security. This led me to break down the campus into coloured sections. I applied that logic to the maps and building identifiers around the campus and added an extension to their browser to provide users to option of inputting in their destination.

Impact

My idea proposes a new way of looking at a space, and adding beacons throughout the journey so that individuals can understand the area they are navigating through. These combined elements of Pathfinder unconsciously holds the users hand throughout the journey, supporting them in creating a comfortable experience. It remedies issues in orientation, navigation, and provides the user with emotional security. This system will not only provide users with a sense of assurance, but will also make them comfortable within their current location.
